Dia de los Muertos Sugar Skulls: Or the Next Best Thing

That would be these exquisite sugar skull cookies by Sugarbuilt. And unlike many of the other highly decorative novelty cookies out there they do not taste like cardboard; these are actually New Mexican bizcochito cookies, cinnamon and anise flavored. Sugarbuilt will deliver in NYC (they're in Brooklyn, naturally) or ship.

I Grew These Cucumbers

Look what I grew! Look! Look! Look! Why is growing food so exciting for amateur gardeners? I don't know. Here's what's coming next.

Grilled Squash Blossoms

A couple years ago I developed a recipe for grilled squash blossoms stuffed with creme fraiche and some other cheese. The magazine folded before it published and to this day I don't know how I pulled off this recipe without it going all to mush -- probably used less creme. These blossoms were stuffed with a mixture of creme fraiche and grated sharp cheddar with fresh epazote.

Here are the blossoms, cooking alongside some brick chicken that fell apart but that was nonetheless delectable. I used this recipe from Cathal Armstrong via Tasting Table. It made Lane jump for joy.

Jon Stewart Strawberry Margaritas

Inspired by Jon's ill-fated mock press conference -- see below.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup strawberry and ice puree
  • Juice of 1/2 lime
  • 1/3 tequila
  • 1/4 cup triple sec
  • Ice cubes

Directions: Puree strawberries and pour in a container, then crush ice. Add strawberries back in and mix. Pour ingredients into a salt-rimmed glass with a few cubes of ice. Enjoy with or without scandal.

I made this with the KitchenAid blender I won at TECHmunch Saturday. EEEEE! I never win anything. I'm so excited.
