4th of July 2009

Our Buddhist Bo Bo chickenHope you all had a fantastic 4th of July! We had some friends over to celebrate on the roof. So did our neighbors--I love how on weekends and especially holidays a community of roof-dwellers sprouts like desert flowers after the rain. But to the food...
My experiments with millet continue; I made a salad with cucumber, spring onion, yellow carrots, herbed oil, and lemon juice. It was still a little on the bland side. I have to say, I'm not impressed with millet. It lacks the nutty flavor of quinoa and even cous cous. Next time I'll try cooking it in chicken stock. On the other hand, our friends' spinach salad (from their CSA!) was delicious, as was their quinoa with squash.
We had fun scaring the kids with the chicken feet. I'll be making some stock with those feet this week.
For dessert I made a rhubarb and blueberry tart. Why do I never see rhubarb-blueberry recipes? It's a great combination. One of our friends is glucose intolerant, so I made her a pot of blueberries with sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Whipped cream on the side.
This year Macy's moved their fireworks from the East River to the Hudson, which means we did not have a big show in Brooklyn. But from the rooftoop we could see fireworks displays in the distance all across the horizon. I love gazing out and seeing tiny light rosettes blooming and disappering everywhere.
Millet coda: on Sunday I took the millet salad leftovers and added chopped olives and garlic scrapes--and more salt. This was much better.

It all looks yumtastic.
Maybe try dressing the millet with a mustard vinaigrette and letting it sit in the fridge for a day? That's what I do with my Wheat Berry Salad. It helps un-bland the wheat.
